ESC!Webs Site of the Week

Special Edition: August 16, 2000

CNN - Viva Elvis!

Main Web Site: http://www.cnn.com/SHOWBIZ/9708/elvis/

Twenty three years ago on this day, Elvis Presley passed away at his home in Memphis Tennessee.  Today, some might say that Elvis is still alive working in some road side diner pumping gas.  I say that he is alive, but only through the minds and efforts of some of his biggest fans.

A routine search on Yahoo! turns up 57 different web sites dedicated to the King of Rock and Roll and 143,000 site matches in the search engine Google!  Yowsa!  So how does one pick one out of all of these sites as Site of the Week?  Easy, just like anyone else you stumble across one...

Back in 1997 -- the twentieth anniversary of Elvis' death, CNN created the site Viva Elvis! to celebrate the life of Elvis Presley.  This site is still active and full of interesting information even if all of the features are not operational any more.  For instance, they had a Elvis impersonation contest and a velvet Elvis painting contest.  Okay, so those are over, but there still is the rest of the site to explore!

What You'll Find

The Viva Elvis! site is divided up into seven main categories: Destination Elvis, Interactive Elvis, The Elvis Presley Story, King of the Web, Elvis Arcade and Impersonate Elvis.

Destination Elvis is a list of places around the country where you'll find "tangible reminders" of The King and his legacy.  Following one of the three major links on the page, you can find yourself whipped off into a never ending spiral of Elvis locations around America, around Graceland and around Memphis, TN.  Without following each link, I cannot tell you which ones are still live and which have folded, but I guarantee that if you are an Elvis fan, you'll find yourself mesmerized by the content to be found here.

Interactive Elvis allows you to vote on his best and worst movies as well as his best and worst songs.  You'll also find links to the aforementioned Impersonation and Velvet Elvis links.

The Elvis Presley Story is broken up into four sections detailing various chapters of Elvis' life including the numerous sightings made every year across the country.

King of the Web is the obligatory listing of web sites devoted to Elvis.  Since this site is two years old you may find that some of the links don't work anymore.  I tried going to Virtual Graceland and it wasn't up, so watch out for debris!

Next you'll find a few Shockwave games in the Elvis Arcade.  Play Name That Movie or the Elvis Presley Lyrics Challenge.  Finally you can really test your knowledge with the Elvis I.Q. game.

What Else Is There?

Well, not much, but the links you find can keep you in Elvis for many months to come.  I suppose the only thing I don't like about the site is some of the tongue-in-cheek humor you'll find scattered throughout.  I mean, leave the poor guy alone.  He can't be blamed for dying in the 70's when the fashions weren't at their best.  Can he?

CNN - Viva Elvis!

Site Rating: 8/10
Pros: Good starting point for locating other EP links.  Good introductory information about Elvis.
Cons: A little jabbing humor here and there.  Nothing too bad though.  Site is old.  Could stand a little brush up.

Requirements: None
